The story so far
Nobody knows Oyíndàmọ́là's full story, because she has never told it. She arrived at Kisi thin, half-feathered, and silent, and the kindest forecast was 'weeks.' Dr. Amara's case notes from that first month record, in order: 'eating a little,' 'standing,' 'perching, low bar,' and finally 'moved her wing for the new chick.' That last line is now framed in the ministry.
The new chick was Chi-Chi, three weeks old and motherless. Grace kept her warm through her first week, and has kept a corner of her wing available ever since, for Chi-Chi, and then for every frightened new arrival after her. The chicks call the spot 'Grace's side.' There is sometimes a queue.
When The Coop Times finally secured its long-requested exclusive interview, Grace sat with the correspondent in the shade for three minutes, said nothing, and shared his grain. The piece ran in full, 'Three Minutes with Quiet Grace,' text: a description of the shade, and is the most reprinted article in the paper's history.

The new hen who stood apart
A new hen had come to Kisi that week, and she was having the hard first days. She stood a wing's width from the flock, left a little of her feed, and said nothing at all, the way frightened birds do when the world has not yet been kind to them. It was exactly, Dr. Amara thought as she came round the corner, how another hen had once stood, years ago, thin and half-feathered and forecast 'weeks.' But before the minister could reach the newcomer this morning, she saw that someone was already there. Quiet Grace had settled down beside the stranger and opened a corner of her wing, the same corner she keeps open for every frightened new arrival, and was simply, patiently, sitting with her until the world felt smaller.

Dr. Amara stopped, and for once did not reach for her notes. She did not need them. She has kept Grace's file since the first month, the one whose lines still read, in order, 'eating a little,' 'standing,' 'perching, low bar,' and finally 'moved her wing for the new chick.' That last line is framed in the ministry, and here it was again, living and breathing in front of her: the frail case file nobody expected to thrive had grown into the first thing that finds a frightened bird before trouble does. 'Welfare first,' the minister has said all her career, 'and the rest follows.' She watched Grace's wing over the trembling newcomer and thought, this is the rest, following. By the end of the week the new hen was eating with the others, and the Republic never knew it had almost had a hard one.
